2010 Legislative Session Update #10
Posted On: Jan 29, 2010 (06:33:08)

We had mixed results in the House Business and Industry Committee this evening.  Gross receipts tax and enforcing taxes against out-of-state workers are moving on, but other revenue ideas like making out-of-state internet sellers pay the same tax as New Mexico companies and making out-of-state corporations pay corporate income tax (combined reporting) don't seem likely to go very far.  Equalizing internet and store taxes would be a boost to New Mexico business, but was tabled and does not appear to be brought up again.  Combined reporting was attacked by a dozen or more well-paid corporate lobbyists, who nearly broke into tears explaining how Wal-Mart loves workers.  It was quite the display.

Thank you to everyone who called or emailed--we're making progress in getting at least some revenues moving through the House.

ACTION

If you're able to make a call or send an email Friday before 1:30 p.m., please contact Democratic House Tax and Revenue Committee members and ask them to support House Bill 9, which is a bill that would repeal just a part of the massive 40% tax break that millionaires got in 2003.  Our early intel that Republicans are voting as a bloc against even the most common-sense revenue measures was confirmed tonight when they uniformly voted against every type of revenue, advocating for more cuts to government instead.  Please call ASAP!

RALLY

Remember that the Rally for Revenue at the Roundhouse is this Saturday, January 30.  Lunch is at 1:00 on the west side of the Roundhouse, the rally is at 2:00, and there's a reception at the Inn at Loretto at Alameda and Old Santa Fe Trail from 4:00-6:00 p.m.  See you there!
